Do you have Storm Damage? We're here to make it "Like it never even happened"

Severe Weather Ready

There is a time of the year when tornadoes are more prominent than others. That time is often during the spring and summer, possibly in the fall as well. Many people don't have a plan for severe weather that includes tornadoes. With a little careful planning, your family can have an increased chance of staying safe during a storm.

Make A Plan For The Family
Although you need to create a plan, there is something more important that you need to do with your family. You need to practice your plan so that everyone knows where to go no matter what time of the day or night severe weather strikes. Write down all of the important phone numbers of family and friends so that you can stay in contact with them after the storm to ensure that they are safe. Another important number to have is your insurance adjuster. This number is beneficial if there is damage to the home. Companies like SERVPRO can come to the home to help with water removal and other storm damage that occurs inside the house.

Keep copies of all of your important documents, such as social security cards and birth certificates. You also need to have a way to communicate with others in the event there is no power or phone service. If there is a large group of people in the disaster area, each person needs to know how to contact others. Designate a leader and an assistant to check with others in the area to make sure everyone is accounted for after the storm.

An emergency preparedness kit is something to have so that your family can survive if there is no power or if the family is stuck in the home because of damages from the storm. Items in the kit should last for about 72 hours. Batteries are essential so that you can use your phone, radio or a battery-powered television. You also need flashlights, a gallon of water for each person for at least three days and non-perishable foods. Other items that you might want to include in your kit are blankets, powdered formula for babies, a first aid kit, and clothing. It's also a good idea to have a spare cell phone charger.

Before a storm arrives, if possible, secure items that might blow away. These include chairs and toys that are in the yard. When you are prepared for a natural disaster and the storm damage that could take place, it can help give your family a peace of mind so that they can focus on remaining safe and together.

Tornadoes can cause widespread damage and in Southeastern Michigan we know that from experience. But there are some facts you should be aware of when it comes to these destructive entities that tear through our homes and businesses.

Here are some facts about tornadoes:

  • The average tornado travels Southwest to Northeast but have been known to move in any direction.
  • Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3pm and 9pm but can occur at any time.
  • Dr. T. Theodore Fujita devised the F0-F5 Scale for tornadoes in 1971.
  • In 2006 the National Weather Service unveiled the Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale).
  • A tornado normally appears transparent until it picks dust and mud from the ground.
  • The USA averages around 1,200 tornadoes every year, more than any other country.
  • In the southern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a clockwise direction. In the northern hemisphere tornadoes usually rotate in a counterclockwise direction.

Signs of Danger

  • Dark, green tinted sky
  • Large hail
  • Low-lying rotating cloud
  • Loud roar similar to a freight train

Remember, tornadoes can strike at any time. Have a family plan in the event of a tornado warning. Know where your safe areas are wherever you are.

Call SERVPRO of Bay City at anytime at 989-893-8340 if you have any questions about tornadoes, or what to do if one damages your house or other property. We’re available 24/7, so we’ll be there when you need us.

If a company claims they will remove all mold from your home. Walk away. Everly home will harbor a certain amount of mold spores and possibly small colonies in hidden pockets and voids.

Here are some frequently asked questions about mold remediation.

How Do I Find the Right Mold Remediation Specialist?
The two most important thing to check for are a license to operate and full insurance. This is crucial; if a mold remediation company causes more damage, instead of remediating the current infestations, you need to know that it is covered and can pay for the costs incurred.

Then, do some research and look for online reviews and testimonials. If possible, seek feedback from a previous client who used a similar service to the one that you need. While it is not always a legal necessity for mold remediation companies to have full certification, you should ask for evidence of qualifications and training. SERVPRO provides years of experience with full licensing and certifications as set forth by the IICRC standards. Our technicians then have additional corporate, eLearning, and franchise level on-going education. This is a serious field--mold remediation that requires expertise, experience, and top-notch equipment.

As for cost, it is important to choose your mold remediation specialist carefully. The rates do vary wildly from company to company. The companies with the highest rates do not necessarily offer the best restoration services, so look for a team with excellent qualifications and a lot of experience. SERVPRO will always look out for your best interests and offer you only the services that improve your home and health.

How Do I Know If the Mold Remediation Service is Acceptable?
It is essential that all mold remediation companies perform a final clearance assessment, to make sure that you are satisfied with the work provided. This will give you a chance to raise any issues that you have and ask questions about future prevention measures.

If you are particularly worried about the quality of work, you can seek the approval of a third party company. This third party would not perform any job, but would be paid by you for advice and feedback on the quality of the restoration. This is not necessary if SERVPRO has been your mold remediation company. We do a final walk-through with you to guarantee your satisfaction with our service. We provide ducumention that the moisture levels are reduced, inhibiting the return of a mold infestation. Our record speaks for itself. Your Auburn mold damaged home will be restored to its preloss condition "Like it never even happened."

Fire damage in your Auburn home?

6/15/2018 (Permalink)

Auburn fire damage incidents happen very frequently. They can cause issues in the home. Many things cause fires. Among the common causes of fires are lightning strikes, cigarette mishaps, electrical issues, and the most common--kitchen accidents. In many cases, you can extinguish flames quickly. The damages are minimal. However, some fires last a long time and can result in greater damages done to the property.

A small fire can cause a staggering amount of damage in a home. Often, it is only a particular room in the home that is charred, but the damages may have an extension beyond that area. For one thing, smoke that comes from the fire can fill up the whole place. The smoke often circulates in several rooms. Smoke damage occurs when acidic ash or chemicals react with metals, plastics, and wood. Corrosion often occurs. Smoke can permeate the carpets and other soft surfaces such as fabrics, drapes, and clothing. Soot is the by-product of partially combusted plastics, vinyl, and other non-cellulose fuel sources. This results in stains because of the oily nature of soot. SERVPRO utilizes specialized dry sponges to clean carefully hard surfaces. With proper technical work, using the IICRC standards of cleaning, many materials can be salvaged (think drywall) ready for repainting. Why demolish building materials if restoration, rather than replacement is an option? The professionals can remove damage caused by soot and smoke by also cleaning and deodorizing the HVAC system.

You should call a professional when there is a fire of any consequence because only a professional fire damage restoration service can thoroughly take care of the fire and smoke damages done to the home. There is a process involved in repairing the ruin done to the home. This process includes the assessment of the home. They need to dry the water that has resulted from the fire. There is also an inspection that needs to occur. After the review and the assessment process, the restoration work can begin.

What SERVPRO Does

When the cleaning process is complete, all belongings can be moved back in. The SERVPRO technicians will perform repair and reconstruction work including carpet installation, tile replacement, and painting. The company will also offer advice on future flood prevention so that the situation can be avoided in the future.

What to Do Before SERVPRO Arrives

How to Know When You Need a Mold Remediation Company

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Linwood mold is a hazard that can exist in a home for months or years before being detected. Although mold might seem harmless, it is not. It is something that most homeowners cannot deal with alone. Mold can destroy a house. It is important to know when you need to contact SERVPRO.

Why You Cannot Ignore Mold in the Home
Mold can grow and slowly destroy the structure of the house. It can rot wood and drywall. It can also decompose carpets.

Removing Mold Yourself
It is tempting to think that you can deal with a Linwood mold problem yourself. This might be true if you see just a small amount on a non-porous surface like a metal fixture or a plastic bracket. Bleach can usually kill that mold. Unfortunately, if you spot mold, then there is likely much more on porous surfaces like your walls. It might even be hidden between the walls, under sinks or inside carpets. You do not want to rely on do-it-yourself solutions if you detect mold in your home.

When to Call SERVPRO
You should call a mold remediation company whenever you find a significant amount of mold in one place, or patches of mold spread throughout your house. A remediation company, like SERVPRO, will test your home for mold, seek out the source of the mold and then remove it. They can often repair or stop any Linwood mold damage. The company will be able to use special tools to find hidden mold in your home. They will remove the mold in a way so that spores are not redistributed into other rooms. It is always best to call SERVPRO when you find patches of mold in the house.

Preventative Actions to Take
After SERVPRO finishes, you can do a few things to prevent future problems. Start by ensuring your house is well ventilated to remove excess moisture. Check your insulation since it acts as a moisture barrier. Maintain a good temperature so that the air is not overly humid. If you do experience humidity problems, then run a dehumidifier during the day. These actions can slow or prevent the growth of mold.

Vigilance is key to preventing mold growth. A professional mold remediation company, like SERVPRO, can address mold issues in homes and businesses as well as help property owners. However, if mold growth does occur, SERVPRO should be called immediately to minimize any damage and stop the mold from spreading.

Increase the Heat

In the summer, keep the thermostat on a low heat setting, and insulate the walls on the property.

Reduce Steam
Steam is a common cause of residential and commercial mold damage. To reduce steam, homeowners and business owners should:

    •        Do not allow standing water to sit in the sink or a drinking glass.
    •        Install and use an extractor fan in the bathroom to clear the steam after a hot shower or bath.
    •        Put wet clothes outside on a clothesline to dry instead of indoors.
    •        Run the ventilation fan on the range hood to suck up steam from liquids boiling on the stove top.

Maximize the Air Flow
An easy way to keep residential and commercial damage from the mold at bay is to open the windows and let cold air circulate inside the property. Open windows keep surfaces dry and push mold spores outdoors. To further increase the air flow and reduce hidden pockets of air, pull furniture away from walls. If mold is spotted behind furniture or curtains, SERVPRO can help eliminate it.

Other Mold Prevention Tips
There are other ways to prevent commercial damage and residential damage from mold. SERVPRO recommends that business owners and homeowners:

    •        Fix any leaks from dripping pipes and water overflows from eavestroughs.
    •        Keep the roof in good repair, especially if the roof is flat.
    •        Throw away mold damaged items such as books and rotting food.

National Fire Pup Day

Community National Fire Pup Day Sparky poses with the Monitor Fire Department Truck

October 1st is National Fire Pup Day. Today we at SERVPRO recognize the canine firefighters that have long been members of fire departments across the country. When most of us think of a “fire pup”, the image that comes to mind is a Dalmatian. Have you ever wondered how Dalmatians became the firefighter’s mascot?

In the days of horse-drawn carriages, dogs were a popular means of protection for the carriage’s occupants. Dalmatians were a popular carriage dog breed, partly due to their natural athleticism, and partly due to the fact that they were well-behaved around horses. It didn’t take long for the Dalmatian to make the jump from carriage dog to fire dog.

Early firefighting equipment was horse-drawn, and Dalmatians were frequently used as “sirens” running along ahead of the horses, barking warnings that told people the fire wagon was coming and to “get out of the way.” Fire pups also guarded the wagons as the firefighters worked, and even did “chores” (like chasing rats) around the firehouse. Today Dalmatians don’t run ahead of fire trucks, but they still maintain a visible presence at many fire departments as a mascot and fire-safety symbol.

While most firefighting-related jobs have been taken over by machines, machines haven’t completely replaced dogs in search and rescue efforts. According to the Search Dog Foundation—a non-profit organization that helps partner rescue dogs with firefighters—fire pups need to be able to focus and concentrate even when surrounded by loud noises or strangers, and they need to be healthy and athletic. Not surprisingly, common search dog breeds include retriever breeds like Golden Retrievers and Labradors, as well as herding breeds like German Shepherds and Border Collies.

After a fire strikes your property, addressing the aftermath is immensely valuable. Although there will be many steps to getting your property back in its original condition, attaining professional help from a Essexville fire restoration company is of particular importance. If you do not seek help immediately, you could make your residential property susceptible to structural damage and mold growth. Learn more about Essexville fire damage and the importance of attaining professional restoration help by reviewing this quick reference guide:

Preventing Mold and Mildew Growth
Once your home has been subjected to fire, there is an increased risk of mold growing and spreading throughout the property. This is the case for several reasons, including the fact that water damage creates the moist, wet environment in which mold can grow and thrive. Preventing this mold from growing is important for several reasons, including the fact that the presence of the fungi constitutes a health hazard. When molds release their spores into the air, you and your family may inhale them. Inhaling the spores can result in numerous health problems, including pathogenic diseases, immune disorders, and respiratory complications. Additionally, you or your family members can develop an allergic reaction to mold. When this happens, you can manifest unpleasant symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. Luckily, professional Essexville fire restoration specialists possess the equipment, expertise, and experience necessary to quickly eradicate unwanted mold from your property.

Preventing Structural Damage
Water damage that results from a house fire can cause severe structural damage to your property. Specifically, the water damage can weaken your home's structure by causing warping stairs and woods, collapsing floors and roofs, and sagging ceilings and walls. These problems emerge when water seeps into the core structure of the property. To prevent this type of damage from transpiring, it's important for you to hire a team of trained Essexville fire remediation specialists. These individuals will conduct thorough assessment to discern the extent of water damage. Once they have completed this process, the remediation specialists will be able to implement a customized cleanup, repair, and restoration plan.
